Lawrence, Kansas Mourns the Loss of Officer Zachary Garcia-Kerns
Lawrence, KS — The Lawrence community is grieving the sudden off-duty death of Officer Zachary Garcia-Kerns, who passed away on April 3 at the age of 28. Officer Garcia-Kerns served multiple departments in the area, including the KU Police Department starting in October 2021 and the Lawrence Police Department from November 2023.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, though no foul play is suspected. Known for his dedication to public service, Officer Garcia-Kerns was also an organ donor, potentially helping save up to 75 lives.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but the Lawrence community and law enforcement colleagues are expressing condolences and remembering his commitment to safety and service.
