The Dunkirk, New York community is mourning the sudden loss of Danielle Russell, the cherished principal of School 5 in the Dunkirk City School District. Superintendent Brian Swatland confirmed the news, highlighting Russell’s dedication and transformative influence in education.

Danielle Russell began her career with Dunkirk City Schools in 2021, serving first as Principal of School 7 and Director of Special Education before taking the helm at School 5. Known for her compassion, warmth, and leadership, she fostered a strong sense of community and belonging among students, staff, and parents alike.

“Mrs. Russell was a devoted and caring administrator who loved our district and the family and students she worked with at School 5,” Swatland stated. Her commitment to student well-being and academic growth created a supportive environment where all could thrive.

Russell’s passing follows a leave of absence announced on March 23 to focus on her health. In her memory, her family has established a GoFundMe to fund a scholarship supporting future students in Dunkirk. Carol Smith has been appointed interim principal to continue Russell’s work at School 5.
