Toronto Police Arrest Suspect After Shooting at Jewish-Owned Restaurant in North York

Toronto police have arrested a man in connection with a shooting at the Old Avenue Restaurant, a Jewish-owned business in North York, on the third day of Passover. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Friday at the intersection of Avenue Road and Brooke Avenue, though the restaurant was closed and no injuries were reported.

The suspect, 30-year-old Mohamed Mahdi from Brampton, faces four firearm-related charges, including discharging a restricted or prohibited firearm and possession of a loaded prohibited firearm.

Chief Myron Demkiw credited the service’s new counterterrorism unit for quickly identifying and apprehending the suspect. This marks the second time the restaurant’s owner has been targeted, though details of the previous incident were not disclosed.

Toronto police continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.
