A tragic single-vehicle crash in Baton Rouge has claimed the lives of three individuals, leaving the Gardere community in deep mourning.

Authorities have identified two of the victims as Zacariah Johnson, 20, and Marqies Duncan Jr., 15. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim, a 30-year-old man, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.

According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred Monday night at approximately 8:40 p.m. along River Road, just south of Gardere Lane. Investigators reported that the vehicle was traveling northbound when it failed to navigate a curve, veered off the roadway, and collided with a utility pole.

Officials believe speed may have been a contributing factor in the deadly accident, though toxicology results are still pending. Authorities have not yet disclosed additional details, including the type of vehicle involved or how many occupants were inside at the time.

The crash prompted temporary road closures along River Road between L’Auberge Crossing and the parish line, near the L’Auberge Casino and Hotel, as emergency crews responded to the scene.

This devastating incident has sent shockwaves through the Gardere area, a close-knit community just south of Baton Rouge. Family, friends, and residents continue to grieve the sudden loss, with tributes expected to honor the lives of those who died.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office remains actively investigating the crash and has stated that more information will be released as it becomes available.
